How do you spend your Thanksgiving? Some families spend the holidays traveling while others have traditions that keep them close to home.
Thanksgiving is a national holiday, celebrating the harvest and other blessings throughout the year or one's lifetime. A dinner also takes place, where you feast on some delicious food and share what you are thankful for. The true meaning of the Thanksgiving holiday is about being thankful and recognizing blessings. Milan High School students, particularly, spend the holiday eating good food, watching football, and shopping on Black Friday. Students stay close to home while spending quality time with their loved ones at their home. Others travel to another family member or friend's house.
“I usually don’t eat a lot during the beginning of the day, to have room for Thanksgiving dinner,” explained senior Jett Issacs. “I spend time with my family. My mom cooks this big dinner, then we eat, and maybe watch a movie together.”
Jett isn’t the only one who spends time watching a movie and spending time with the family during the holidays. Senior Andra Gatlin shared, “My family usually starts the holidays by just simply spending more time together, we watch movies and have more family dinners.”
Dinner is typically one of the main pieces of the puzzle during the Thanksgiving holiday. While the mom cooking is usually the case, this doesn’t apply to this lovely large family that senior Ryan Legier-Demond is a part of. “I invite my family over as we all make different dishes for dinner and watch football together.”
People in the U.S typically feast on the general variety of dishes. Some of these dishes include turkey, ham, stuffing, sweet potatoes with marshmallows, cranberry sauce, rolls, mashed potatoes, green beans, mac and cheese, corn, pulled pork, and potatoes. The number 1 side dish in Michigan is the rolls. There are also traditional Thanksgiving desserts. Examples of these desserts are pumpkin pie, apple pie, cookies, and cake. Some families also find themselves watching football with their families. This year the Lions are playing the Bears on Thursday, November 25th with kickoff starting at 12:30 pm.
