Behind the Scenes of The Nest

The staff of the Milan school store, The Nest, have been working hard to get this small business open. Like any other small business, there have been many setbacks that these students are trying to overcome. Some main major setbacks have been trying to get a point of sale system, coming up with smart snack foods, and trying to get everything approved.

Some things that people don't see are, ordering food and making sure we can sell it. When starting a business there are many factors to consider. One main focus is our point of sale system. This system is so people can make purchases using cash, card, gift card, and apple pay. In order to make more profit, we need many options of payment for students and staff. Our class did a presentation to Mr. Girbach and Mr. Shinn to show them the benefits of 4 different types of POS systems. We are waiting for approval to place an order for the system. Once this system is purchased then we can look at foods we can sell and start ordering shirts. For the shirts, we have a heat press to put vinyl on shirts and vinyl is not cheap.

In order to sell food at the Milan High School School Store, the food has to be a healthy snack. We have been introduced to a calculator that tells us if the snack meets the requirements set by the US Department of Agriculture. The calculator will tell us if the snack is compliant with the food regulations. From there we decide if the food item can be purchased or scratched off the list.

Senior Jordyn Bergeron said, “I am most excited to start selling the shirts. I want to make our senior shirts.” Her excitement has been building up and she has been pushing through the bumps in the road. Just like any small business opening, the grand opening of the Nest has been delayed a few times. Even though the staffers are frustrated, they understand that there are bigger things going on than what is within their control. Either way, excitement is building, products are getting ordered, and The Nest is about to be nested into its place in the MCIS space.
