The Milan High School girls varsity swim and dive team continues success in the 2021 season! Starting on August 9th at midnight, the swim and dive team began a rigorous practice schedule. Most mornings and afternoons are spent in the pool with coaches Kerry and Heikka. These girls are dedicated to their team and dedicated to keeping their 21-year long tradition of winning the Huron League Championship.
On September 21st, the team competed against Chelsea High School. After the fifth event, Milan was winning by four points. But after diving, they raced even harder and carried the win through the end of the meet. The final score was 112 to 74. The swim team is able to have such successful seasons every year because of the intense practices. Most days, the girls spend three hours practicing, in the pool and sometimes in the weight room.
Some girls on the team have earned a spot on the state team. Junior swimmer Phoebe Rhoney recently got a state cut in the 500 freestyle. Other state-bound swimmers include Annabelle Williams, Elaina Malach, and Hailey Brady. The girl’s varsity swim team was recently ranked the eighth-best Division 3 team in the state of Michigan. This not only reflects state meet success but dual meets as well. This demonstrates a well-rounded team overall.
The captains this season are seniors Molly Smith, Hailey Brady, and Mackenzie Ensign. During practice, captains are in charge of leading the team’s practice when the coaches are working with individual swimmers. At meets, it is the captains’ job to keep spirits high and make sure everyone is cheering. Being supportive of their teammates is one of the team’s priorities. Cheering loud and having fun is important to this team. As the season continues, these girls will continue to work hard and have great success.
