Four years ago Milan was struggling with players and barely had any to play a game, let alone make a team. In the last two years, Milan’s soccer program has grown exponentially. The sophomore and freshman each have around fifteen kids which is enough to make two teams on their own. They've had an overabundance of kids recently, so much so that they’ve had to cut kids from the team. That's the first time that’s happened in the last eight years.
Since they’ve had so many more players this year they have been able to raise more money. More kids mean more parents and fans showing up to support the players and buy some concessions. This in turn leads to more money every game to save up for new balls and goals. More kids also bring more money from fundraisers, recently the Milan Highschool soccer team sold Hungry Howie gift cards. With the gift cards, they sold they were able to raise over $2,000 dollars.
Since they raised that money they are able to buy new jerseys for their team. The problem is though when the tornado hit Milan almost a month ago. This destroyed the brand new goal and the dugout. This will set the team back some money, but as they said, hopefully, the insurance will cover it.
This year there are a decent amount of seniors on the soccer team. There were originally three, but after a little bit, three more players joined the team. Even though they are losing six players they are gaining more than they had before. There are over ten kids joining next year which is a crazy amount of new players. This will in turn help the team raise more money and be able to attract more players to the team in later years.
With Milan continuing to expand and grow, we are all excited to see what they do in the future.
