"This is a woodcut that I created of my Grandfather. The portrait in the foreground is him later in life, obviously, but the image behind him is a photo from Life Magazine. They were following General McArthur during WWII and my grandfather was chosen as one of his 6 armed guards. The photo is McArthur standing over dead enemy soldiers and the man to his right is my grandfather."-Ms. L
Most people know Ms. L as a fun and creative art teacher. But a lot of people don’t know what makes up her identity. Since she was young, Ms. L has loved to create art. After high school, she was not able to give that up. So, she decided to continue to pursue art. Throughout everything she does, she is thoughtful and limitless. Ms. L is dedicated to her students and getting to know her is a pleasure.
Many students at Milan High School have taken at least one of Ms. L’s classes. She teaches varying Art and Pottery electives. Kaitlyn Pfeiffer says she “loves how she inspires students to be creative in their own way.” Having a place to create in a unique way is beneficial to students. Ms. L understands this and wanted to create art even after her high school career ended. So, she attended Adrian College to study fashion design. She finished her degree studying at the American College of London to get her BFA. “I chose to study abroad in London because I wanted to go as far away as I could. I loved being in London. I actually felt safer in London than here.” -Ms. L.
Coming back to America was a big change for Ms. L. Without having a job in fashion to come back to, she decided she wanted to begin teaching art. She says: “I was starting a family and wanted to have the same schedule as my son...my mother was never home when I was younger and I didn’t want my son to have that.” After beginning to teach, Ms. L was pleasantly surprised by the artistry demonstrated by her students. She says her favorite class to teach is “Art II because the talent is amazing, creativity is above and beyond what [she] could think of, and most of the students want to work and be in that class.” She always speaks very highly of her students, inside and outside of the classroom.
While Ms. L may be tiny, she is very mighty, not only through her art but outside of it as well. Aside from school, Ms. L enjoys racing her car. When sharing this information, many students were surprised. While this is not expected from her, Ms. L was beaming with excitement while talking about it.
Ms. L is a teacher that is well trusted by many students. She is very easy to talk to and such an encouraging and intelligent person. This being said, Ms. L shared some advice for all high school students: “Take every opportunity to travel and go as far away from home as possible. With travel, you become a better person. And don’t limit yourself.”
