Going into the season, they knew they were good, but it was a matter of how good and where that could get them.
A key part of their huge successes this year is their coach, Dan Heikka. Most people know the swim team for its outrageous practice schedule. If you don't, the Milan High School girl's swim and dive team has been waking up at 5 a.m. to be in the pool at 5:45 a.m. all year long.
Asking why in the world would anyone want to do this, their coach said, “You get used to it; it’s what you need to do to be successful.”
Spending so much time together, the team has grown very close with not just each other, but also their coaches.
Heikka said, “working with the team has been great. This team of girls is made up of high achievers and unlike some years, I can focus on fine-tuning rather than reteaching the basics.”
If you don't know what he’s talking about, right now the girls are ranked 4th in the state according to MHSAA and 1st according to Swimcloud.
Heikka said, “The goal is always to be as good as you can, it’s just this year we happen to be fortunate enough to be in a position where being as good as we can, may be able to carry us to winning a state title.”
Keep a lookout for this team on November 19th because clearly, this will be a year for the books.
