It was by no surprise that the Milan tennis team was going to do great things this year, but one star got the opportunity to shine under the brightest lights high school sports have to offer.
Matthew Bowman got to represent the Big Reds at the MHSAA state tournament. We asked Matt what the experience was like. “It was a much different experience than last year being with the whole team in Ann Arbor, but it is one I will never forget. I will never forget this experience. From the extremely funny situations on Thursday night to warming up in the dark Friday morning, even to the conclusion of my last tennis match and seeing how much support I have.”
This also wasn't his first rodeo. He had experience that most people didn’t have, and that was being on this stage before. “I was definitely more comfortable in the tournament having been there before. It also was great to see how even when the competition improved over the year, I did the same. To be able to qualify two years in a row, the first qualifier in Milan history is an amazing accomplishment.”
Matt is invested in the growth of Milan tennis and loves to see the direction that the program is trending. “What stands out this year is the ability of multiple new members of the team to jump in on day one and be vital pieces to our success. Even though we did not quite go as far as we hoped, before the season we were not sure if we would even have enough players. However, that was not the case. Having over 25 people at tryouts was a great thing to see, and for most of them to be able to pick up the sport extremely quickly and rack up wins is absolutely amazing. I hope that this growth continues so that the Milan tennis program can have sustained success.”
